If MySQL won’t start after upgrading to newer version,

root@server [~]# service mysql start
Starting MySQL....The server quit without updating PID file[FAILED]

To solve the problem, you can try to backup MySQL configuration file (my.cnf) located in /etc/ folders and create new blank MySQL  configuration file.

</pre>
root@green [~]# cd /etc/
root@green [/etc]# ls -al my.cnf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1028 Jun 6 20:25 my.cnf
root@green [/etc]# mv my.cnf my.cnf
my.cnf my.cnf.old
root@green [/etc]# mv my.cnf my.cnf.old.1
root@green [/etc]# touch my.cnf
root@green [/etc]# service mysql start
Starting MySQL.. [ OK ]

there may be a problem with innodb in mysql, another way is using skip-innodb in my.cnf. but better solution is you re-create my.cnf using tools from this article
